Query Expediter How-to Guide

This resource allows you to build custom Uniform Resource Locator (URL) strings that you can embed in your own Web site that will link users directly to the on-line mapping application with specific storm tracks pre-displayed. In this way, you can let your users bypass the standard query options and go directly to the map and see storm tracks that have already been plotted.

Instructions on creating the custom URLs to link to specific storms are included below. If you have trouble creating one or more URLs containing your parameters of interest, or have a general question, contact csc@csc.noaa.gov.

Query Expediter Example

For an example of how this works, visit the National Hurricane Preparedness Web site's History and click a link beneath one of the thumbnail pictures. Doing so takes you directly to the Historical Hurricane Tracks Web mapping tool—with the featured storm pre-plotted. For interaction, you can use the tools located above the map. To assist you in developing customized URLs, an Atlantic Basin table of storm names and numbers and an East-Central Pacific Basin table of storm names and numbers (PDF, requires Adobe® Reader®) are available. The example below provides the storm tracks for Flossy, Brenda, and Dora.

Note About Geographic Queries

All geographic queries need other values defined. Use this same format for all geographic queries. After the .html?QE= insert one or more of the following parameters:

MONTHS=9,10,11,12 (if no value is specified, all months are searched)

YEARS=1901,1902,1903 (if no value is specified, all years are searched)

CATS='H3','H4','H5' (comma delimited list of categories-if none listed, all storms are searched)

DIST=65&UNIT=MI (If distance is specified the tool looks for units—if no units specified, the tool uses nautical miles; if no distance is listed, the tool uses 65 Nautical Miles)
